MIMEH Goes to Washington

Author: Stacy Gallin    Published: October 8, 2016    4 Comments

This past week, MIMEH was in Washington, D.C. to meet with representatives from the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and present at the American Society for Bioethics and the Humanities (ASBH) Conference to raise awareness regarding the importance of studying medicine, ethics and the Holocaust.  These meetings are part of MIMEH's continued efforts to establish partnerships and collaborate with like-minded institutions so that together we can ensure that the legacy of those who perished at the hands of Nazi medicine are not forgotten.

The relevance of this educational topic remains critically important for bioethics education. The context of medicine's role in research and human right's misconduct continues to need exploration and nuanced analysis.

In looking at the current state of our electoral candidates, I am reminded how fragile freedom is and how easily people are swayed by rhetoric. We'd like to think the holocaust is a thing of the past- but it is all to realistically something reproducible. Higher education and strong ethics which embrace peace and non-confrontational reasoning is crucial in compelling leaders to not repeat history.
